Ryan was appointed to the Port Authority Police Department in 2006 and has worked as a police officer at the New Jersey Marine Terminals, PATH and the George Washington Bridge. In January of 2014 Ryan was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was assigned to New Jersey Marine Terminals, Kennedy Airport and PATH.

In July of 2016, Ryan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned to Police Headquarters as the Planning and Research Lieutenant. Since then, Ryan has worked at both the Lincoln Tunnel and PATH, where he is currently assigned.

In April of 2022, Ryan was elected to the position of Trustee in the Lieutenants Benevolent Association and currently serves as the Associations Sergeant at Arms since his appointment to the position in February of 2025.

Ryan resides in Middlesex County New Jersey with his wife and two children.
